Art That Speaks: Visual Storytelling for Change
Kelley Simons Syed
Thursday 3:30pm - 5pm
Ages 6–12
This 12-week 2D art class invites students ages 6–12 to explore how images can communicate ideas, challenge unfairness, and imagine a better world. Using drawing, collage, and collaborative projects, they create artwork about the things they care about—like fairness, kindness, community, identity, and the environment. Inspired by contemporary artists such as El Anatsui, Corita Kent, and Kara Walker, students learn that art can be both creative and meaningful while discovering how their own ideas can make a visual impact.
Learning Goals
*Understand that images can express ideas, advocate, or tell stories
*Explore collaboration, empathy, and listening through art
*Build confidence to experiment and communicate visually
*Learn from contemporary artists using art for social awareness
12 Week Session: 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, (no class 4/9), 4/16, 4,/23, 4/30
