Art, Story & Representation
Kayleen Berry
Thursday  3:30pm - 5pm
Ages 6–12

Join Kayleen to explore the intersection of storytelling, representation and visual art through drawing and painting.

Each week at the start of class we will share an inspiration; a song, short story, poem, etc. We will use an array of media to depict the characters, feeling or narrative as we envision them, using different tools and techniques learned along the way.

We will discuss self-representation through objects, hobbies, music and symbols, exploring how we visually define ourselves and then the characters and narratives we share each class.

– Icebreaker & Pencil Drawing
We’ll start with a creative icebreaker: drawing self-representation through objects, hobbies, music, or symbols that define you. Then we’ll explore pencil techniques-learning the unique shading and hardness of pencils from HB to 5B.

– Chalk Pastels & Shading
We’ll experiment with chalk pastels, exploring rich hues, blending, and shading techniques to add depth and vibrancy to our artwork.

– Acrylic Painting & Color Theory
Students will learn basic color theory and work on small canvases with acrylic paints, discovering how color choices affect mood and storytelling.

– Mixed Media & Final Character Design
Students can work in their medium of choice or combine them to create a final illustration of a book character. We’ll think deeply about appearance, clothing, accessories, and the environment the character inhabits.

-By the end of the workshop, each student will have a portfolio of work that reflects their imagination, technical growth, and personal interpretation of the characters and inspirations we have encountered.

11 Week Session: 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13, 11/20, (no class 11/27), 12/4, 12/11, 12/18
